Being the second oldest and second largest dzong in Bhutan, Punakha Dzong is the country’s most gorgeous and majestic Dzong. This district, leveling from 1300m at the valley floor rises to almost 3000m around Dochula pass, served as the capital of Bhutan from 1637 till 1907. People visit this place mostly to understand the Bhutanese history and to enjoy its natural beauty.
There is so much to understand and admire about the works presented in the Dzong like the intricate paintings and the architecture of the fort, sacred relics of the southern Drukpa Lineage of Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism, and the sacred remains of Ngawang Namgyal and the terton Pema Lingpa. Around the Punakha Dzong, Chhimi Lhakhang is one place nature lovers and explorers should not give a miss
